| | | Outdoor Classroom Where We’re Growing Greatly at the Grove!
| |
| Did you know we have almost 20 acres of land at Shady Grove? With all
that land comes a lot of opportunity to explore and learn in the
outdoors. Here are some of the programs offered at SGES: The Cardinal Café – Birds Only! Starting
this fall, Girl Scout Troop 604 is working to earn their Bronze Award
by coordinating this program. Feeders are placed in the windows around
the school, cleaned and maintained by the troop and enjoyed by all!
Update from Troop 604
November 11 by Brookie B. With the improving weather this month, we have seen more bird activity at the feeders around school. A Blackcapped Chickadee visited one of the feeders after we filled it last Wednesday. We expect to see even more birds as it turns cooler and the birds are looking for food!
Brookie Bumgardner October 11 by Katie S. Three members of Girl Scout Troop 604 are working on our Bronze Award by helping in the Outdoor Classroom. Every Wednesday after school we clean and refill 20 feeders on the classroom windows. It has taken a few weeks but the birds are starting to munch on the food. We are using safflower seed in the feeders to prevent squirrels from eating the food and to attract lots of cardinals.
Journey North In
this international science experiment, students in hundreds of
classrooms plant the same tulip bulb variety. When the tulips emerge and
bloom, the students post their findings on the interactive maps,
learning how seasonal climatic factors influence plant growth. “The
relationship between geography, temperature and the arrival of Spring is
revealed one garden at a time.” Visit the Journey North Website for
more info.
Edible Garden Coming this September!! After a long
year of planning, we are in the final stages of approval for the new
raised vegetable garden. The garden will be located outside the
cafeteria in the back of the school. Mark Ziegler is coordinating this
project as a community service project required for his Eagle Scout
Certification. We hope to have it in time to plant lettuce this fall to
donate to the Food Bank. Go, Grow…Give!
All About Butterflies Each
year kindergarteners release their butterflies into our very own
butterfly shaped garden located in the garden outside the Library. This
year the Moritz Family has offered to adopt the garden after many years
of caretaking from the Henry Family.
Peace Garden Last year
thanks to a generous donation from Strange’s Garden Center, we received a
new red rose garden in the schoolyard outside the art room. New this
year, the Third Graders will be adopting this area. Check out all the
fun events and free monthly gifts for kids at the Strange's Pea Pod Club.
SGES Marquee Our school marquee has been adopted by the
Wyndham Garden Club. A special thanks to Nancy and Tom Dawson, Shady
Grove Grandparents, for landscaping this area of the school. This
garden is too close to the street for us to maintain it with the
children, so their caretaking is very valuable to us!
Lesson Plans and Materials (Coming Soon)
A
great garden requires lots of helpers! If you don’t mind a little dirt
and you love to work with kids in a great hands-on, outdoor setting,
then we are looking for you! Contact Sarah Westmoreland at sjwestmo@verizon.net or 426-9292 to get involved. In addition, we could
always use some angel donors to provide a flat of flowers, new tools,
shrubs and/or expertise.
